LASIK improves the focusing power of the eye to treat short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism. During the procedure, the surgeon guides a laser to carefully reshapes the cornea, which is the transparent covering of the eye. This improves the way light travels through the eye and focuses on the retina. The result is clearer, crisper vision — without corrective eyewear.

LASIK is performed on an outpatient basis. We will completely numb your eyes with anaesthetic drops, so you will not feel a thing. We can also give you a sedative medication to help you relax. The entire procedure takes about 5 to 15 minutes, and the laser treatment itself lasts less than a minute. Surgery is over before you know it.

Step 1 – Creating the flap

The first step of treatment is to create a thin, hinged flap on the surface of the cornea. We create the flap with a femtosecond laser. This flap is folded back to reveal the deeper layers of the corneal tissue.

Step 2 – Reshaping the cornea

Next, an excimer laser delivers pulses of light that precisely remove microscopic amounts of corneal tissue to reshape the cornea’s curvature. After we have reshaped the cornea, we restore the corneal flap to its original position over the eye, where it heals on its own.

Not only is LASIK a brief procedure; the recovery time is minimal. Most patients notice an improvement in vision almost immediately after surgery.

After leaving our centre, we recommend resting your eyes for the remainder of the day. You can likely resume work, driving and most of your daily routine as soon as the day after surgery. You should use medicated eye drops prescribed by Dr. Russell to reduce inflammation and prevent infection.
