Dr. Matthew Russell explains how you feel after TransPRK
PRK AND TRANSPRK EXPLAINED
What you need to know about TransPRK
Before laser eye surgeons were changing people’s lives with LASIK, they were performing a version of the laser eye surgery called PhotoRefractive Keratectomy (PRK). If you depend on glasses or contact lenses to see clearly, but you have been told you do not qualify for LASIK surgery, PRK is a wonderful alternative.11 Brian S. Boxer Wachler, 2017, PRK laser eye surgery: How it differs from LASIK, All About Vision, US https://www.allaboutvision.com/visionsurgery/prk.htm
At VSON, however, we go one step further with TransPRK (transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy) by SCHWIND. TransPRK is a touch-free laser eye correction method used with SCHWIND AMARIS laser systems.
Benefits of TransPRK at a glance
- Touchless: no suction, no flap, no incision
- Safe: high corneal stability
- Fast: treatment in one step
- The short healing process with faster visual outcomes than conventional PRK
- Very good clinical results equal to conventional PRK and LASIK12Eye-tech-solutions.com. 2021. SCHWIND TransPRK – the no-touch laser eye treatment. [online] Available at: <https://www.eye-tech-solutions.com/transprk#:~:text=Unlike%20with%20conventional%20methods%20like,and%20gentle%20to%20the%20eye.> [Accessed 28 June 2021].
After TransPRK, you should be able to…
- take advantage of high definition vision, free from glasses or contact lenses
- go about your daily life without the inconvenience of corrective eyewear
- notice how much more enjoyable work and leisure are without glasses or contacts
- engage in a wide variety of contact sports or physically demanding occupations
- enjoy more freedom and live life to the fullest.13Hossein Ziaei, MD, Marzieh Katibeh, MD, MPH, Maryam Sabbaghi, MD, Mehdi Yaseri, PhD, and Armen Eskandari, MD, 2012, PMID: 23264864, Vision Related Quality of Life in Myopia; Photorefractive Keratectomy versus Nonsurgical Optical Correction, Journal of Ophthalmic & Vision Research https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3520590/#!po=78.5714
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
You may be a good candidate for TransPRK if:
- You’re 18 years or older
- You haven’t experienced any significant changes in your vision prescription in the past six months to a year
- You’re in good health and do not have any serious eye conditions
- Your corneas are too thin or unusually shaped, or you are prone to dry eye problems
- You’re at a higher risk of flap-related complications because of your occupation or normal activities (e.g., you are a professional athlete or a first responder).
- Take our online laser eye surgery self-test to get a preview of your TransPRK suitability

- Leading technology. Dr. Russell uses technology (including the technology that makes all-laser no-touch TransPRK possible) that can make your treatment safer, more comfortable, and more precise.14VSON | Laser Eye Surgery Brisbane. 2021. What is the best laser eye surgery technology?. [online] Available at: <https://vson.com.au/what-is-the-best-laser-eye-surgery-technology/> [Accessed 28 June 2021].
TransPRK is similar to LASIK in that it uses laser energy to reshape the cornea to treat refractive errors permanently.
One key difference is that LASIK involves the creation of a corneal flap, and TransPRK does not.
TransPRK is an outpatient procedure, so you can return home the same day as surgery. Before surgery, we will numb your eyes with drops, so you do not feel any pain during the procedure. We also provide oral medication to help you feel relaxed and comfortable.
Removing the top layer of the cornea
Unlike with conventional surface laser methods like LASEK, Epi-LASIK and PRK, with TransPRK the eye is not touched with any instrument.15Adib-Moghaddam S, Haydar AA, Razi-Khosroshahi M, Soleyman-Jahi S, Tefagh G, Grentzelos MA, Arba-Mosquera S, Kymionis GD. Predictors of Visual Acuity Improvement and Supernormal Vision After Refined Single-Step Transepithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy. J Refract Surg. 2019 Dec 1;35(12):771-780. doi: 10.3928/1081597X-20191025-01. PubMed PMID: 31830293.
Instead, the SCHWIND AMARIS laser removes the epithelium, without suction, flap, or blade, and without the use of blunt alcohol. This touch-free procedure is non-invasive, safe, and gentle to the eye.
Reshaping the cornea
Dr. Russell then uses an excimer laser to carefully reshape the cornea’s curvature. After the TransPRK, he places a bandage contact lens over the eye.
It takes slightly longer to recover from PRK than TransPRK, which takes slightly longer than LASIK because the surface cells of the cornea need to regenerate.16Gaeckle, H.C. Early clinical outcomes and comparison between trans-PRK and PRK, regarding refractive outcome, wound healing, pain intensity and visual recovery time in a real‐world setup. BMC Ophthalmol 21, 181 (2021). https://doi.org/10.1186/s12886-021-01941-3https://bmcophthalmol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12886-021-01941-3
Your vision should be good enough to resume work, driving, and the rest of your normal activities within a week of surgery.
TransPRK may offer a safe, less painful, and effective alternative to alcohol-assisted PRK in the treatment of mild and moderate myopia, especially in cases of thin cornea.17Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy versus conventional alcohol-assisted photorefractive keratectomy for correction of mild and moderate myopia, Waleed A Ghobashy, Mohamed E Shahin, Karem A Kolkailah
