WHAT OUR PATIENTS EXPERIENCE
Be self-reliant with eye lens surgery
Who can lens surgery help?
You may benefit from lens surgery if you:
- are tired of having to wear glasses for refractive errors, such as long-sightedness or presbyopia (the age-related loss of close vision)
- the lens, which is in the anterior surface of the human eye, regulates the amount of light focused on the retina. Ageing and other factors can lead to the lens losing its function, which is to focus light rays and help us focus on objects. In lens replacement, the surgeon replaces older natural lenses with intraocular lenses. Following lens surgery, patients often no longer require reading glasses. In cataract surgery, lens replacement replaces the old, cloudy crystalline lens with an artificial intraocular lens. The aim of cataract surgery is clear vision, free of cataract.
- don’t like the hassle and maintenance of contact lenses
- don’t meet the requirements for laser eye surgery, or you do not want to permanently reshape your cornea
- have early signs of a cataract or would like to eliminate the need for future cataract surgery.

- You’ll savour life’s simple pleasures as you were meant to appreciate them.

LENS REPLACEMENT
Dr. Matthew Russell explains what life is like after lens replacement
LENS SURGERY EXPLAINED
What you need to know about lens surgery
Correcting your vision and achieving freedom from the inconvenience of glasses and contact lenses sometimes goes beyond the scope of laser eye surgery like LASIK or PRK. In other cases, laser eye surgery may not be sufficient to correct your severe prescription.
If you wear reading glasses or varifocals or are not a candidate for laser eye surgery, we may recommend you opt for a permanent alternative: ocular surgery.
We can replace your natural crystalline lens with an intraocular lens implant (IOL). We can also place an implantable contact lens (ICL) inside your eye to help you see clearly and do all the things you love.
There are two types of lens surgery.
- Lens replacement removes your eye’s natural lens and replaces it with an artificial lens. This procedure improves the way light passes through the eye and focuses on the retina.
- Implantable Contact Lenses (ICLs) work just like removable contacts, except that they are surgically inserted into the eye.
Lens replacement surgery or refractive lens exchange (RLE) is virtually identical to cataract surgery, except the lens we replace is clear rather than cloudy. This procedure has a history that goes back to 1949 and is the most commonly performed elective surgery technique in the world.
We use lens replacement to safely and effectively fix:
- Long-sightedness (hyperopia)
- Short-sightedness (myopia)
- Presbyopia (the age-related loss of near vision)
We can surgically insert contact lenses (ICLs) into the eye, where they cannot be seen or felt.
We use ICLs to fix:
- Extreme short-sightedness (myopia)
- Extreme long-sightedness (hyperopia)
