Can you get LASIK while breastfeeding?
If you’re a breastfeeding mother who’s considering LASIK surgery, you might be curious whether the procedure is safe while nursing. Unfortunately, the answer is no (for now).
Let’s explore why.
What is LASIK?
LASIK stands for “Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis.” It’s a type of laser eye surgery that helps treat farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism. During the procedure, a laser reshapes your cornea to improve your vision so you can see clearly without glasses and contact lenses. Despite being a common and fast procedure, LASIK requires particular caution under certain circumstances.
Is it safe to undergo LASIK surgery while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Our answer is no on both counts.
1https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6692418/ Pregnancy can cause hormonal fluctuations that can affect your eyes’ prescription, making LASIK potentially ineffective. Fluid accumulation behind the eyes during pregnancy can also affect your cornea and lead to changes in your eye prescription. Furthermore, undergoing LASIK entails taking medications that aren’t safe for developing babies if you’re pregnant.
Breastfeeding women should also think twice before undergoing LASIK as vision prescriptions can still fluctuate during the postpartum period. Hormonal changes can alter the shape of your cornea, making LASIK unsuitable. The chemicals utilised during the procedure can enter your breast milk, making it unsuitable for nursing infants.
When should you get LASIK?
It’s best to undergo LASIK surgery before pregnancy or once you’ve finished breastfeeding. It’s essential to consult with your doctor to determine the most appropriate time to undergo LASIK surgery based on your individual circumstances.
