VISION CORRECTION IN BRISBANE
Why does vision correction cost what it does?
Despite the fact that vision correction on 1 eye can cost the equivalent to 1 bottle of imported beer in a restaurant every day (i.e. $9.00) over a year, some people wonder why it costs what it does.
The diagnostic equipment alone costs around $50-100K to set up.
Then, there is the cost of training an eye surgeon for the job, which usually takes about 18 years – most of it post-graduate.
Then there is the cost of the premises, support staff, insurance, and other incidentals involved in running a world-class clinic in a major urban centre.
Laser eye surgery
The laser for the first step of the laser eye surgery procedure (the femtosecond laser) costs about $500K2https://www.reviewofophthalmology.com/article/can-you-afford-to-do-femtosecond-cataract, with per-use fees ranging between $350-$450 per eye.
Then, there is the typical cost range for the excimer laser (that shapes the eye) between $150.000 at the low end to nearly $300.000 at the high end (we’re on the high end of that for sure).
Lens surgery
There’s a bit more involved in lens surgery than conventional laser eye surgery, therefore the costs are higher.
The lens implants also add an additional cost depending on the type you choose.
