How long do LASIK results last?

Dr. Matthew Russell explains how long results from LASIK laser eye surgery last

The big benefit of LASIK eye surgery is that it’s a surgery that can be done for the vast majority of people.

For those who undergo the LASIK procedure, the vision improvement they get lasts their lifetime.

While laser eye surgery has fast and permanent results on the front window of the eye (the cornea, which accounts for about 2/3rds of the power of the eye), the lens inside the eye (which laser eye surgery does not affect, accounts for 1/3rd of the power of the eye) continues to age throughout life. As a result, while laser eye surgery will permanently correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism, it cannot stop the progression of presbyopia (an aging lens) in the long term, which will eventually result in one needing corrective lenses to add power as one ages…

The best way to find out if eye treatment is right for you is to have an in-person assessment. You’ll get a clear answer from our experts on your suitability and vision correction options

There is also a small percentage of patients who go through refractive surgery, who have a change in vision in the first six to 12 months, and they develop something called regression. This is where they drift back slightly towards their original focusing error. They become shortsighted again if they had suffered from shortsightedness or they become long-sighted again if they started having long-sightedness.

Those patients need to have some enhancement procedures to fine tune their vision to get them back to the target that they were aiming for with the laser treatment.
