How long will implantable contact lens results last?

Dr. Matthew Russell reveals how long the results of implantable contact lenses (ICLs) last.

An intraocular contact lens will restore vision for a very long time.

Unless something else changes in the eye, then the contact lens will function without any problems. An eye can change its focus with time to a small degree, and this on average is about half a diopter, or half a focus in a unit, per decade after the age of 50. That means that if you’ve got good vision correction with an ICL in your thirties or forties, you should expect to retain very good quality vision right up into your sixties…

The best way to find out if lens surgery is right for you is to have an in-person assessment. You’ll get a clear answer from our experts on your suitability and vision correction options

Now at that point in time, it is normal in most people to start to develop a cataract, and the cataract itself will affect the quality of the vision. That’s a natural process that over 90% of us will go through. At that point, the cataract is interfering with the field of vision. The contact lens itself would still be functioning quite normally.

Cataract surgery can be done at the stage in one’s life where the vision has become significantly affected. Even with implantation of an ICL, it’s still completely possible to do routine cataract surgery and routine cataract surgery that would restore the benefits that were achieved with the original implantation of the contact lens.
