What is SmartSight?

SmartSight (and SMILE) are both forms of lenticule extraction. Many eye surgeons regard lenticule extraction as the most cutting-edge, minimally invasive laser eye surgery for the correction of short-sightedness (myopia), with or without astigmatism.

We at VSON use SmartSight. This means, we can perform femtosecond laser surgery without a corneal flap.

With SmartSight, a laser places a series of pulses within the cornea, forming bubbles less than 1/1000th the width of a human hair. These bubbles outline the tissue that needs removing and create a tiny connecting tunnel through which we can extract it. Removing this tissue alters the shape of the cornea, thus correcting nearsightedness.

  • With SmartSight, we don’t create a flap, so the eye is more comfortable during the procedure and postoperatively than with other laser eye surgery techniques.
  • This minimally invasive treatment has been designed to reduce possible risk thanks to the tiny incisions and microscopic equipment used throughout the procedure.
  • SmartSight can also correct astigmatism, as well as shortsightedness, making it a flexible choice of surgery.
  • There is less dry eye with SmartSight.
  • With accurate centring, even in higher degrees of astigmatism, we can achieve precise treatment and results with Smartsight.
  • This advanced technique for lenticule extraction features clever eye-tracking technology, which means the laser is able to keep up with the fastest and most minute movements your eye might make during surgery.
  • Patients can return to applying eye make up, as well as taking part in physical activities such as swimming and sports, sooner.

  • We cannot yet use SmartSight to treat long-sightedness.
  • Visual recovery takes slightly longer compared to LASIK. With a LASIK procedure, a patient can experience instant visual recovery. SmartSight’s visual recovery can take several days.
  • Enhancements are more challenging compared to LASIK.
  • The procedure can be more expensive due to the advanced technology it uses.
  • SmartSight has relatively less clinical and follow up experience compared to TransPRK and LASIK.

Not necessarily. All three procedures achieve the same results. There will always be a place for LASIK and PRK, because not everyone will be suitable for SmartSight.
