Treatment options for Presbyopia: From LASIK to Lens Replacement in Brisbane

If you’re 40+, chances are you’ve started to notice the early signs of presbyopia (ageing eyes). This condition, caused by the hardening of the eye’s lens, makes it more challenging to focus on close objects. Reading becomes a chore, and you may even find yourself holding books and newspapers at arm’s length to better see the print.

While no one can yet reverse presbyopia, there are many treatments available. From LASIK to lens replacement, we will explore the options available in Brisbane.

LASIK blended vision

We call this procedure PresbyMAX. With this procedure, your surgeon uses lasers to correct each eye for both near and far vision. As a result, you’ll have excellent distance vision in one eye and near vision in the other. Your brain will then learn to automatically switch back and forth between the two eyes depending on what you’re trying to focus on. For instance, when looking at something far away, your brain will use the information from your distance vision eye while switching to your near vision eye when looking at something up close.

Lens replacement surgery

Not everyone is a candidate for PresbyMAX. In those cases, we may recommend Lens replacement surgery instead. With this procedure—which is also sometimes called refractive lens exchange—the natural lens inside your eye is removed and replaced with an artificial one called an intraocular lens (IOL).

Several different types of IOLs are available; your doctor will help you choose the best suited for your individual needs and lifestyle.

Unlike LASIK blended vision, the results of lens replacement surgery are permanent.
If you’re starting to experience the early signs of presbyopia, don’t despair—help is available! There are several treatment options out there that can help improve your vision.
