Can your eyes get worse after LASIK?
Hello, I’m Matt Russell from VSON Laser Vision Specialists. If you’re concerned about the possibility of your vision declining after LASIK, let’s delve into this topic. Once you’ve recovered from laser eye surgery, the changes made to your cornea by the laser are permanent and completely stable.
Following LASIK surgery, the alterations made to your cornea are permanent and typically stable. Your eyes quickly adapt to the new vision. However, it is possible that your eyesight will worsen after laser eye surgery due to two reasons
- Regression – Regression is a phenomenon in which the eye’s natural tissue, including the cornea, tends to revert to its original shape post-operatively. During LASIK surgery, we reshape the cornea through flattening or curving it. This tendency is more pronounced with high-profile treatments for severe prescriptions. To correct refractive errors, LASIK is often recommended.
- Presbyopia – an unavoidable part of the body’s ageing process. It’s important to point out this is not because the effects of laser eye surgery are temporary. Unfortunately, as we all get older our eyes change and we develop presbyopia. This usually happens between the ages of 45 and 65. Because of this, it’s important that we make it very clear that we can’t guarantee that you will never need glasses again. The natural effects of presbyopia may mean you need glasses in the future.
The good news is that laser eye surgery can be used to compensate for these small changes by having a simple adjustment or enhancement procedure.
