Is radial keratotomy the same as LASIK?Hi, it’s Matt Russell from VSON Laser Vision Specialists. Today, I’m going to answer the question “is radial keratotomy the same as LASIK?”The answer to this question is no.Radial keratotomy (RK) is a refractive surgical procedure to correct myopia (short-sightedness) and was developed in 1974, by a Russian ophthalmologist. Today, RK is considered an obsolete procedure. It is unlikely that your optometrist or ophthalmologist will recommend it. Despite this, there are some situations in which you may benefit from this operation.Furthermore, don’t confuse RK with PRK. RK uses incisions whereas PRK uses a laser. Many laser eye surgeons use PRK today, although LASIK is a more common procedure with a more comfortable and faster recovery process.LASIK has many benefits over other, older refractive surgeries like RK. It improves a wide range of refractive errors, including farsightedness and primary astigmatism. It takes little time in the operating room, and it is less invasive, so healing takes less time. Many people who undergo LASIK return to work the next day, with exceptions for people who have physically taxing jobs.To learn more about LASIK, and know which treatment is best for you to free yourself from the hassle of glasses and contact lenses, please book online for a free laser vision assessment on our website today.Found this post useful?
