LENS REPLACEMENT

Dr. Matthew Russell explains what life is like after lens replacement

LENS SURGERY EXPLAINED

What you need to know about lens surgery

Correcting your vision and achieving freedom from the inconvenience of glasses and contact lenses sometimes goes beyond the scope of laser eye surgery like LASIK or PRK. In other cases, laser eye surgery may not be sufficient to correct your severe prescription.

If you wear reading glasses or varifocals or are not a candidate for laser eye surgery, we may recommend you opt for a permanent alternative: ocular surgery.

We can replace your natural crystalline lens with an intraocular lens implant (IOL). We can also place an implantable contact lens (ICL) inside your eye to help you see clearly and do all the things you love.5Healthline. 2021. ICL Surgery Procedure, Benefits, Side Effects, and Precautions. [online] Available at: <https://www.healthline.com/health/icl-surgery> [Accessed 28 June 2021]

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

There are two types of lens surgery.

  1. Lens replacement removes your eye’s natural lens and replaces it with an artificial lens. This procedure improves the way light passes through the eye and focuses on the retina.
  2. Implantable Contact Lenses (ICLs) work just like removable contacts, except that they are surgically inserted into the eye.

Lens replacement surgery or refractive lens exchange (RLE) is virtually identical to cataract surgery, except the lens we replace is clear rather than cloudy.6Rcophth.ac.uk. 2021. [online] Available at: <https://www.rcophth.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Refractive-Lens-Exchange-Patient-Leaflet-April2017.pdf> [Accessed 28 June 2021].

This procedure has a history that goes back to 1949 and is the most commonly performed elective surgery technique globally.7Davis, G., 2021. The Evolution of Cataract Surgery. [online] PubMed Central (PMC). Available at: <https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6139750/#:~:text=Cataract%20surgery%20is%20one%20of,treatments%20in%20all%20of%20medicine.> [Accessed 28 June 2021].

We use lens replacement to fix:

We can surgically insert contact lenses (ICLs) into the eye, where they cannot be seen or felt.

We use ICLs to fix:

The lens, which is in the anterior surface of the human eye, regulates the amount of light focused on the retina. Ageing and other factors can lead to the lens losing its function, which is to focus light rays and help us focus on objects. In lens replacement, the surgeon replaces older natural lenses with intraocular lenses.

Following lens surgery, patients often have improved vision without glasses.10dictionary, M., 2021. Refractive lens exchange: what is it, symptoms, causes, prevention and treatment | Top Doctors. [online] Top Doctors. Available at: <https://www.topdoctors.co.uk/medical-dictionary/refractive-lens-exchange> [Accessed 28 June 2021].
