What age does presbyopia start?
Presbyopia is the medical term for age-related farsightedness (or near vision loss). It is a universal eye condition that usually affects people over the age of 40. If you are over 40 and have trouble reading or focusing on close objects, you may be starting to experience presbyopia. The good news is that there are several options for treating presbyopia.
What Is Presbyopia?
Presbyopia occurs when the eye’s lens begins to harden and thicken with age. This makes it more difficult for the eye to focus on close objects. Presbyopia usually starts to occur around the age of 40.
At first, you may only notice symptoms when you are doing close work, such as reading or using a computer. As presbyopia progresses, you may have difficulty reading even small print and may need more light to see clearly.
Treating Presbyopia
There are several treatment options available for presbyopia, and the best option for you will depend on your individual needs and lifestyle. Two of the main treatments are lens replacement surgery and LASIK blended vision.
- Lens replacement surgery involves removing your natural aged lens and replacing it with an artificial one called an intraocular lens. This is a permanent solution and eliminates the cause of presbyopia.
- LASIK blended vision is a less invasive treatment that involves using lasers to correct each eye for near and far vision. This way, you can see close objects clearly with one eye and distant objects clearly with the other eye. Although LASIK blended vision improves the symptoms of presbyopia, it is not a permanent solution as the lens will continue to age. You may need top-up procedures after a number of years.
So if your vision isn’t what it used to be, call us or book an assessment to discuss the best way to improve your vision.
