What are the risks of refractive cataract surgery?

Dr Matthew Russell discusses the risks of refractive cataract surgery

Fortunately, refractive cataract surgery is a very safe surgery, one of the safest surgeries performed on the human body. But like any surgery, there are some risks. 1American Refractive Surgery Council. 2021. Is Cataract Surgery with Vision-Correcting IOLs Safe?. [online] Available at: <https://americanrefractivesurgerycouncil.org/refractive-surgery-procedures/cataract-surgery-with-vision-correcting-iols/is-cataract-surgery-with-vision-correcting-iols-safe/> [Accessed 9 June 2021].

The vast majority of people going through surgery will have a very smooth, seamless postoperative course. A very small percentage of people will have a mild postoperative complication, which delays recovery but does not result in any long-term reduction in vision.2Perrone D.M. Argentinean Flag Sign. http://www.ascrs.org/Meetings/ASCRS-Film-Festival-Winners-2000.cfm (Accessed February 18, 2008) Now, these complications may be things such as a reaction to an eye drop, more inflammation than would be typical requiring a longer course of postoperative drops.

There are some very rare risks of serious complications such as infection, which we can manage. 3Complications of Cataract Surgery. (2018, April 23). WebMD. https://www.webmd.com/eye-health/cataracts/complications-cataract-surgery.
