Will laser eye surgery wear off

Hi, it’s Dr. Russell from VSON. When I tell people I’m a LASIK surgeon, some ask me: “How long does laser eye surgery last?”.

Laser eye surgery generally results in permanent vision correction. A small portion of patients may develop a low prescription in the first few years after treatment due to something called regression or if the prescription were to usually change.

At VSON, we offer additional laser treatment, at no charge, to correct any prescription that may develop within the first few years following treatment.

With age, you may experience changes in your eyes and other vision problems unrelated to the issue that laser eye surgery treats.

Laser eye surgery lets you see clearly up to middle age, yet despite the permanent changes it makes, it cannot prevent age-related changes.

Now, I’ll share how long it lasts and how it can change your eyesight.

How long do laser eye surgery procedures like LASIK last?

If you have short-sightedness or long-sightedness, you have a 97.6% chance1 Loss of Best Corrected Visual Acuity after LASIK | Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society;: 235-240, 2001. | WPRIM that will no longer need glasses or contacts when you have LASIK, SmartSight or other types of laser eye surgery (until your eyes age naturally).

One of the main selling points of laser eye surgery is how permanent the procedure is, this includes the likes of LASIK and SmartSight eye surgery.

Laser eye surgery, which aims to reshape the cornea to improve long- or short-sightedness and astigmatism, is usually permanent.

After laser eye surgery, you will be able to read, drive, and live your life without the help of glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK will permanently2Loss of Best Corrected Visual Acuity after LASIK | Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society;: 235-240, 2001. | WPRIM correct your refractive error during the procedure, which normally takes less than 20 minutes.

If you experience other vision problems with age (like presbyopia, cataracts or other age-related changes), it is possible for your eyes to also change. Even though laser eye surgery can permanently change your vision, it will not prevent the occurrence of these age-related changes.

We hope this makes things a little clearer for you in terms of how long does laser eye surgery last. To discover your suitability, or if you have any questions, schedule a free assessment at VSON here.
