HOW DO WE EVALUATE LASER EYE SURGERY SUITABILITY?

Dr. Matthew Russell explains how he assesses a patient’s eligibility for eye surgery

LASER EYE SURGERY EXPLAINED

What you need to know about
eye laser surgery

Over 30 million people have had eye laser surgery and achieved independence from glasses and contact lenses since 1990.3Laser Eye Surgery Hub. 2020. Laser Eye Surgery Risks And Success Rates. UK. https://www.lasereyesurgeryhub.co.uk/laser-eye-surgery/safety/ An average of 95.4% of patients were satisfied with their outcome after LASIK surgery. After decades of “clinical studies and technological innovation, LASIK surgery should be considered among the most successful elective procedures. LASIK surgery compares more favourably with other elective surgical procedures in generally higher satisfaction rates.4Solomon KD, Fernández de Castro LE, Sandoval HP, Biber JM, Groat B, Neff KD, Ying MS, French JW, Donnenfeld ED, Lindstrom RL; Joint LASIK Study Task Force. LASIK world literature review: quality of life and patient satisfaction. Ophthalmology. 2009 Apr;116(4):691-701. doi: 10.1016/j.ophtha.2008.12.037. Review. PubMed PMID: 19344821. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19344821

The types of laser eye surgery we have available are:

SmartSight

SmartSight is a flap-free laser eye surgery that gently reshapes the cornea through a small incision. It’s suitable for people with short-sightedness, with or without astigmatism5https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38717080/. Because no corneal flap is created, healing is often more comfortable and may be ideal for those with active lifestyles or dry eyes.

LASIK

LASIK is a popular laser vision correction procedure that treats short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism6Medicinenet.com. 2021. [online] Available at: <https://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=83884> [Accessed 28 June 2021].. It involves creating a thin flap in the cornea, reshaping the tissue underneath, then replacing the flap. Most people experience rapid visual recovery, with many returning to work or driving within 24 to 48 hours7https://crstoday.com/articles/2014-jan/enhancing-the-speed-of-visual-recovery-after-lasik.

PRK/ TransPRK

PRK and TransPRK are surface-based laser eye surgeries that do not involve a flap. Instead, the outer layer of the cornea is gently removed before laser reshaping. These options are often suited to people with thin corneas, dry eyes, or higher risk of eye trauma due to their profession or lifestyle. PRK is a proven treatment to safely and effectively treat short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism8https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6885542/.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Therefore, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner before proceeding.

Am I suitable for laser eye surgery?

Most people with stable prescriptions for short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism are suitable. A full eye assessment with advanced diagnostic scans will confirm your eligibility and determine which procedure is best for your vision and eye health.

How do I choose the right eye surgeon in Brisbane?

Look for an experienced refractive surgeon who offers a full range of treatments, not just LASIK. Make sure they use advanced technology, take time to explain your options clearly, and are transparent about risks and outcomes.

Is laser eye surgery safe?

Yes. Laser eye surgery is considered very safe when performed by an experienced surgeon using modern technology. Globally, more than 40 million procedures have been performed, with a serious complication rate of less than 1%9https://americanrefractivesurgerycouncil.org/lasik-complication-rate-side-effects/. Most people achieve clearer vision without glasses or contacts. As with any medical procedure, there are some risks, such as dry eyes or visual disturbances, but these are usually temporary and manageable.

How long does the procedure take?

The laser itself takes less than a minute per eye, and the full appointment is usually under two hours. You’ll be able to go home shortly after, and most people can resume light activities the same day.

Does the surgery hurt?

No. Numbing eye drops ensure you won’t feel pain during the procedure. Some people feel pressure or mild discomfort, but the experience is generally quick and well-tolerated.

How long is the recovery time?

Most LASIK patients are back to work within 1–2 days, while PRK recovery may take 4–7 days. Your vision will continue to improve over weeks as your eyes heal fully10https://www.healthline.com/health/eye-health/prk-vs-lasik#efficacy.

Will I still need glasses after surgery?

Most people don’t need glasses for daily activities like driving or working at a computer. As you age, you may still need reading glasses due to natural changes in the lens of the eye (presbyopia).

Is the result permanent?

Yes, laser eye surgery permanently reshapes the cornea to improve your vision. However, your eyes can change over time, and a small number of patients may need a touch-up procedure years later.

How do I get started?

You probably have a lot of more questions about your laser eye options, like ‘Why choose laser eye surgery for astigmatism?’ and ‘Can I drink after laser eye surgery?’

You can book online or call us to arrange an appointment. Assessments are free and suitable candidates all meet with highly sought-after LASIK and PRK surgeon, Dr. Matthew Russell before they commit to eye surgery.
