Can contact lenses cause headaches?

Contact lens wearers often complain of headaches. While many things can contribute to chronic headaches, contact lenses may contribute.

Sick and tired of headaches? It could be your contact lenses

We always recommend you consult with your primary care provider (eye doctor) if you suffer from chronic headaches to rule out any severe conditions. But if you wear contact lenses and experience headaches due to your vision, there might be specific reasons and possible solutions.

Contact lenses headaches explained.

    • Poorly fitted lenses. A poorly fitted contact lens could result in dry eyes. And when your eyes are dry, your contact lenses tend to tighten, resulting in headaches.
    • Presbyopia. This is a condition where your eyes cannot focus at close range – this often leads to headaches for those who have worn contacts for years. The situation usually occurs in people in their late thirties and early forties. If you knit or sit at a computer for long periods, you may experience presbyopia. In addition to distance from the computer and lighting, font size is also an essential factor. You may find comfort with reading glasses if you’re in this age group and have not previously experienced contact problems.
    • Astigmatism. Although toric contact lenses are effective in treating astigmatism, they may not have the same effectiveness as glasses. Eye strain can often result from this, causing headaches. It may be necessary to update your contact lens prescription if you experience headaches due to astigmatism after wearing them for several hours.

How can I stop contact lens-related headaches?

Again, if your headaches from contact lenses persist, you should consult your eye doctor. You can also consider LASIK or SmartSight eye surgery if you cannot wear contact lenses comfortably. If you’ve developed presbyopia, you may want to consider lens replacement.

LASIK involves reshaping the cornea to correct your vision. Short-sightedness, long-sightedness, and astigmatism can all be fixed by LASIK.

At VSON, we are LASIK surgery experts.
