Is there a less invasive laser eye surgery than LASIK?
Hi, it’s Dr. Matthew Russell from VSON. When I tell people I’m a LASIK surgeon, some ask me: “Is there a less invasive laser eye surgery than LASIK”?
Established vision correction procedures such as LASIK and TransPRK have helped thousands of people enjoy improved vision but they aren’t suitable for everyone. In LASIK’s case, this is due to the use of blades when creating a flap on the surface of the cornea. With TransPRK, we are removing the top surface of the eye’s epithelium (skin) to get to the treatable surface.
One common reason why people aren’t candidates for LASIK procedures is due to having thin corneas. And, the relatively longer recovery period and mild discomfort after TransPRK can put some people off. Fortunately, there are advances in laser vision correction that can help people with both issues.
SmartSight is a new development in laser eye surgery that offers a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery. SmartSight is a trade name (like SMILE) that means small incision lenticule extraction. The very name gives a clue as to why this is a preferred treatment for many patients and eye surgeons. It is used to correct short-sightedness (myopia), with or without astigmatism.
This form of keyhole surgery corrects vision by using a high-precision laser to create a small incision in the cornea. The laser then remodels the tissue around the incision, correcting the shape of the cornea and improving vision. The whole procedure takes less than 30 minutes, and there is no need for stitches or bandages. Patients typically experience rapid recovery times and have excellent results.
