Should you feel scared about PRK?

Dr. Matthew Russell explains why you should not be scared of PRK

Most people who are going through laser surgery feel quite nervous on the day of surgery. For PRK, the actual procedure itself is relatively straightforward and fairly simple compared to any other refractive procedure. In fact, it is the simplest procedure that we do.

The surgery is completely pain free. [footnote]WebMD. 2021. How Painful Is PRK Eye Surgery?. [online] Available at: <https://www.webmd.com/connect-to-care/lasik/how-painful-is-prk-eye-surgery> [Accessed 10 June 2021].[/footnote]

The best way to find out if eye treatment is right for you is to have an in-person assessment. You’ll get a clear answer from our experts on your suitability and vision correction options

We numb the eye completely with anesthetic drops and patients really don’t feel anything at all during the procedure. After the procedure, there’s what we call a bandage contact lens in place, it sits on the surface of the eye, and that helps reduce the discomfort after the surgery.

Once the anesthetic drops have worn off with PRK, there is discomfort for the first two to three days following the procedure, but the procedure itself is actually relatively straightforward thing to get through and you really don’t need to feel scared about it at all.
