The smart alternative to LASIK: What is SmartSight eye surgery?

Hi, it’s Dr. Russell from VSON. When I tell people I’m a LASIK surgeon, some ask me: “What is SmartSight eye surgery?”.

SmartSight laser eye surgery is an alternative to LASIK surgery for the correction of short-sightedness and astigmatism.

In some ways, SmartSight eye surgery is similar to LASIK and it may offer advantages over LASIK for some patients. SmartSight is a trade name for small incision lenticule extraction.

SmartSight eye surgery is performed using a SCHWIND ATOS femtosecond laser.

In the SmartSight procedure, the surgeon uses a femtosecond laser to create a small, lens-shaped bit of tissue (lenticule) within the cornea.

Then, with the same laser, a small arc-shaped incision is made on the surface of the cornea. The surgeon extracts the lenticule through this incision and discards it.

With the tiny lenticule removed, the shape of the cornea is altered, correcting short-sightedness and astigmatism – simultaneously. The corneal incision heals within a few hours without stitches, and sharper vision occurs very quickly.

SmartSight laser eye surgery can correct -0.5 to -10.00 diopters (D) of short-sightedness.
The best candidates for SmartSight:

  • Are at least 22 years old
  • Have no more than -5.0 D of astigmatism
  • Have had no changes in their eyeglass prescription for at least 12 months
