What should I look for in an eye specialist in Brisbane?

Hi, it’s Matt Russell from VSON Laser Vision Specialists. Whether you’re just beginning your research into vision correction, or you’ve been looking for a while, there are a few things that you need to look out for when searching for an eye specialist in Brisbane.

What to look for when choosing an eye surgeon

Has the surgeon undergone extensive training?

The first thing you need to look out for when choosing an eye specialist, is whether they have undergone extensive training to get where they are today.

I’m a qualified ophthalmic specialist and surgeon. I qualified almost 20 years ago now. And following that, I went on to do sub-specialty training in the United States and in Canada. Also, I’m one of the few ophthalmic surgeons that’s taken on formal master’s training specifically in the area of cataract surgery and refractive laser surgery.

How many procedures has the surgeon performed?

Another factor to consider is whether the surgeon has performed a high number of procedures. I’ve completed over 20,000 ophthalmic procedures and many of those are procedures, which involve transforming people’s vision to a level where they can become independent of glasses and contact lenses.

Will you see the same surgeon throughout your eye care journey?

The third and final thing to think about is whether you want to see the same surgeon throughout your eye care journey.

At VSON, we think consistency is essential. We believe that a patient should see the same surgeon at every visit, from the initial consultation through to the aftercare and beyond.

Your surgeon should know your eyes, your motivations and your goals like the back of their hand. This kind of rapport only comes with recurrent interactions. Meeting your surgeon for the first time on the day of your surgery is a sign that the clinic is trying to keep costs down and could be compromising on quality.

What do you do once you’ve found your surgeon?

Once you’ve found a private cataract surgeon that ticks all the boxes, you should make an appointment to meet them face-to-face.

This is the best way to establish whether they are a good match for you, and it will also allow you to ask any additional questions that are unique to your circumstances.

Finally, get a second opinion…

There’s also nothing wrong from getting a second opinion if you’re still unsure.
