Dr. Matthew Russell discusses suitability for PRK laser eye surgery

PRK is a procedure that we do on a select number of patients, and we do it primarily in patients who are not good candidates for LASIK.

So why wouldn’t you be a good candidate for LASIK? There are a few reasons.

One of them is that you may perform a job or play high-level contact sports where it wouldn’t be good to have a LASIK flap because that flap could become injured. Or if it did become injured, you could be putting yourself or other people in danger – for example, a firefighter, police officer or a pilot, for example…

The best way to find out if eye treatment is right for you is to have an in-person assessment. You’ll get a clear answer from our experts on your suitability and vision correction options

In that case, PRK is the most appropriate procedure because there is no risk of having a flap related issue.

Also, some people can’t have LASIK because their cornea is naturally too thin. It’s just simply not possible to do the procedure safely and leave enough healthy, normal cornea left behind for the cornea to be stable longterm. In that case, PRK is the best procedure to perform.

An excellent place to start when you’re thinking about laser vision correction is to go to our website and take the online suitability test. In that way, you can, in a detailed manner, find out whether you’re likely to be a good candidate for laser treatment and then take the next step to call us and make an appointment for a free assessment.
