Why choose SmartSight?

Hi, it’s Dr. Russell from VSON. When I tell people I’m a LASIK surgeon, some ask me: “Why should I choose SmartSight?”

SmartSight has all the key benefits of LASIK with equally good visual outcomes; it’s just a better treatment for patients with short-sightedness and astigmatism.

The difference is no FLAP which means it’s even faster healing, more comfortable during and immediately following the treatment. It is less invasive which means potentially less dry eye and a cornea that is bio-mechanically stronger compared with LASIK.

SmartSight, and its predecessor SMILE, are commonly called keyhole LASIK. Unlike LASIK, there is no FLAP. SmartSight it also has all the benefits of the other FLAP free procedure TransPRK, but with dramatically faster healing, comfort levels and a faster return to normal life. You can return to regular life the next day. Almost all of our patients who have had SmartSight are back to daily life the very next morning.

With SmartSight, we can perform femtosecond laser surgery without a corneal flap.

We’re a little biased when it comes to this eye-enhancing surgery, so let us break down the benefits so you can make an informed decision.

Are you a candidate for SmartSight?

We can sing the surgery’s praises, but there’s little use in considering it if you don’t fit the relevant criteria. So, how will you know if keyhole LASIK – SmartSight or SMILE – is right for you?

To get a hint, take a self-test and find out. The majority of shortsighted people who have a prescription ranging from -0.5 dioptres to -12.50 dioptres or those who have astigmatism up to -5.00 dioptres are suitable for SmartSight.

If you’re not a strong candidate for SmartSight, it’s likely that you might be able to benefit from one of our other procedures.

The benefits of choosing SmartSight

  • Advanced technology. As the name suggests, SmartSight is an incredibly smart piece of technology. In this advanced technique for lenticule extraction, clever systems for precisely aligning the laser treatment mean the capacity to correct a wider range of prescriptions more precisely than previous platforms.
  • Minimally invasive. Minimally invasive means that SmartSight uses microscopic incisions enabling keyhole surgery and/or microscopic equipment, which have been designed to reduce risk. Through the small access incisions created by the laser, the surgeon can easily remove the lenticule. Unlike excimer lasers, SmartSight does not require a corneal flap. This means the cornea maintains more of its natural strength compared to LASIK. There is no risk of any of the rare issues associated with a LASIK flap such as dislodgement. Therefore, SmartSight allows a faster return to physical activity and is a better
  • Rapid Recovery.
  • Precise treatment. With accurate centring, even in higher degrees of astigmatism, we can achieve precise treatment and results with SmartSight. This is a major advancement on previous lenticule extraction platforms such as SMILE.
  • Flexible procedure. We can treat short-sightedness and astigmatism with the SmartSight procedure.
  • Comfort is Enhanced. Because the incision size is a fraction of the size, during the surgery, we can perform all of the treatment steps while the patient is in the same position. The fast treatment provides high patient comfort.

There are so many benefits to SmartSight. We’d love to explore these in more detail with you at a one-to-one assessment.
