What are the risks of implantable contact lenses?

Dr. Matthew Russell explains the risks of implantable contact lenses (ICLs).

The risks of putting in implantable contact lenses are very few.

Should you feel scared about implantable contact lens surgery? The answer is no.

Implantable contact lenses can provide clearer vision for individuals who suffer from nearsightedness or farsightedness, or who have an irregular cornea. However, as with all surgeries, there are potential complications to be aware of.

There are small risks, as the measurements, we make before surgery don’t reflect the dimensions of the eye’s internal structures, and the contact lens may not be the correct fit for the eye.

The main implication for that is that the implant is safe in the short term. However, in the long term, the implanted ICL can stay in the eye, and in that instance, an eye surgeon needs to change it for a different sized contact lens.

As far as the risks of very serious complications, there are very rare risks of eye infection, which is less than 1 in 15,000 ICL procedures.1

Also, there are very small risks of cataract formation in your natural lens immediately following the surgery. Learn more about what might happen if you delay or don’t have implantable contact lenses.
